Buyout

So I think Dad should take the next buyout offer and do something else.  The thought of Dad doing something different is weird, but interesting.  I think he should open a pottery shop and sell them online.  He could do lessons and have a cool website and what not.  It would be cool.
What do YOU think he should do?

Claudia and Ed could open a joint shop. Claudia keeps talking about opening a scrapbook store...just some thoughts.

Al D. is doing yard work for the Catholic church, but what are your other buddies doing who took the buy-out dad?

i don't think he should take the buy out. he likes what he does. he would be bored. there is more money in sticking around.

but lets just same time has elapsed and he is on the verge of retirement.

i don't see him opening a business for the sole reason that i don't think he wants to be the face person; the "salesman" he would have to be to excel. even if it were online, there would still be interactions that he is not so fond of. i could be wrong, but look at everything he has parted ways with. he has either given it away, thrown it away, or traded it in for below its market value. it may be for simplicity, but i think he just likes to build stuff for fun. if someone else sells it great, but in my opinion he would want to be the "behind the scenes" guy.

do i have too many "" in this post? are my thoughts a bit disjointed? sorry.

i think he will either get another job, or take up a time consuming hobby (models?)

my .02 dollars.

I disagree, I think Dad enjoys interaction. I think I've heard him say he would like to be a greeter at Walmart when he retires. I realize that kind of interaction is different from what it would take to run your own business, but we've all seen how animated Dad gets when he talks about things he enjoys (cars, home projects, hating "everyone loves raymond", etc). I think he would be great and it would allow him to be creative in his marketing and what not... I don't know... I just saw some home project show on HGTV where they made custom ceramic sinks for their bathrooms... thought Dad could do that...

This is such an interesting post idea, Karl, and I love all your thoughts!

Dad has always enjoyed helping people get the cars of their choice, and I think he would make an excellent auto retailer consultant. He is knowledgeable in that area; he gets animated just talking about the options available to buyers; and he has always been able to get the best price.

The problem is that most people want to make that decision on their own, based on their own understandings on the auto industry, and such subjective criteria as which brand best represents their own personalities. It's the "You are what you drive" mentality that has nothing to do with reality. So I don't know if he could ever make a lot of money doing this (although with both of us having pensions, and good social security benefits, plus our 401K's, we won't especially be hurting for money.

Dad still wants to do more work on the house (think bathroom, Ed!) and I know he is planning a redo on Betsey's old bedroom for this winter. Plus he has all those magazines to read. Your dad will never be bored!

I like the auto retailer consultant idea. He would be good at that. I always think the cars Dad gets are very sharp looking... and like you said, he doesn't have to make a lot of money... Just has to enjoy what he is doing a make a little cash while he is doing it.

i think mom just inadvertently proved me right. her less than stellar description of the auto industry mirrors the disgust dad would have with it as well.

its not just people talking about the artistic lines or efficiency of the drive train; its people wanting "the red one" because they have red fingernail polish. you can idealize and fantasize about how it could be, but for them most part he would stand around.

i stand by my prediction.

I think he should do something with boy toys like building them or working at some toy department. I am not sure if you are aware there is a store out this was by the creators of build a bear -but it is build a car- it ranges from like 15-35$ either a push car or a remote car. I have to bring kyle there some day -cause we say them at an expo and he would not up the cars down - but how fun is that to build your own car. i think he would injoy watching the kids faces when they are building them and help them pick the best stuff to put into the cars.

So Ed you like that we are planning your future.
