Karl: A Question

I don't know if you remember, but I was 'out of town' for 2001 which means I missed the whole Donnie Darko thing, but upon my return I had the impression that the movie was quite beloved by Karl at the time. After all, he was around 16 at the time, great age to get into something really cool. I mean, OK Computer came out when I was 16. Anywho, I never saw the movie until just recently and I wanted to hear Karl's impressions of it.

So Karl, if you're out there, flash back and let me know what you liked about it. Really I ought to just call you for a chat about it, but really? I suck at phone talking. Ask Ed and Claudia. That and I live in the one Verizon blackout zone inside of CONUS.

Alternately, so as not to alienate the rest of you, what came out when you were circa 16 that made you start to take the featured medium (film, popular music, art whatevs) more seriously? (Or maybe just made you feel cool?)

I'm still waiting to find out the source of that chocolate factory quote from Meridth. I have NO clue!

We've already done the Billy Jack confession where I bawled my eyes out at the injustice of it all. I remember walking out of 2001: A Space Odyssey because it was just do darn boring. And it would just be too gay to admit I could quote whole sections from Barbara Streisand's movie Funny Girl (plus perform every song, of course). I remember laughing inside out at Paint Your Wagon, but it was so hard to imagine Clint Eastwood actually singing. Is there ANY movie I can put out there that would give me any credibility? I can't even say that I ever saw the movie Easy Rider. I have no credibility!

I just asked Dad about his influential movie and at least he could admit an absolute classic in the movie Bullitt with Steve McQueen. It had style, it had fast cars, and it had some great scenes of San Francisco that are forever imprinted in my mind. Plus even after, lo these forty years, it has probably the best musical score of any movie ever. Dad has so much more elan than I, having grown up in Chicago, and me the mundane meadows of Minnesota.

I look forward to reading all your influences. You are the most interesting people ever.

Well I just thought Donnie Darko was a gosh darn good movie (wink). Great music, funny swearing, kiddie porn dungeons, sparkle motion, teen angst, crazy rabbit men, vandalism... as far as what it all meant, I'm terrible at understanding those types of things(wink). I always read into movies and books differently than what other people do and what the intentions are, but gee wilickers (wink) I think that's how it should be. A book or movie can mean one thing to a donnie darko dude and a completely different thing to a hockey mom(wink). But you know what I say to anything of substance? Thanks, but no thanks (wink).

But I'd like to bring it back to something completely off topic and that we weren't talking about at all and say, Happy Birthday to my wonderful big sister Betsey (wink). You're the best and I have your back. If you and Richard ever split I will get him fired (wink). I promise you that.

In closing, Rusty, (can I call you Rusty?) I really liked the movie. I thought it was very enjoyable, fun, and I liked how it ended. I also want to thank blogger.com for letting me have this open forum where I can talk straight to my family and not have my words construed by the liberal media(wink). Thanks again, and I hope I actually answered the question.

i want to respond to this after mulling it over for a while, but i will say that i have never seen this movie, but have wanted to for a while. the other one that i have seen, that i have been looking for lately is boonedock saints. i can't seem to find it anywhere. i've got a kid at work that owns it and is going to lend it too me. further responses to follow.

oh, and mom, its not "gay" for a 50 year old woman to like barbara streisand. and you said elan. like lotus elan. ok, i've got to go to bed.
