A REAL Blast from the Past

I got an email today from Uncle Don in Chicago.  He has been in correspondence with a researcher in the Czech Republic who has found previously unpublished pictures of
Grandpa Gimbel's final crash after being shot down while serving in the Air Force during WWII.  I am including the link to the picture and hope that you can see Grandpa watching his plane burn after safely parachuting out of the falling aircraft.  The two women you see running towards him were trying to find out if he was okay.

Interesting, isn't it?  Love you all.  Claudia and Edward

This is so great! THanks mom for sharing. I told Richard that it would make great art for our house. He thought that was a little creepy :) We'll see :)

Wow!. That is so neat. (Neat is the wrong word I guess). I'm just excited.

Yeah Ma, hate to be a stickler, but Grandpa served in the Army Air Corps. The Air Force didn't break of as a separate branch until 1948.

That said, what an interesting slightly eerie picture. Hey, I wanted to write to Uncle Don. Do you have a snail mail address?

Snail mail address is as follows:

Don and Marietta Carlson
3180 North Lake Shore Drive, Unit 15D
Chicago, Illinois 60657-4851

phone: 773-244-0654
email: mardonil@sbcglobal.net

We called them of course, to thank them for following through on the letter we received nearly seven years ago. I love that there are people out in the world who are so interested in history that they will research so meticulously. It makes a fascinating dichotomy to the ennui and disinterest I see in school every day.

Sorry about the Army Air Corps thing. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to all of Grandpa's war stories those many years ago. Your Dad didn't catch that as I was composing the post.
