Claudia and Ed are coming to visit this weekend! Claudia’s only request - see the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Well, she asked and I plan to deliver! Below is our itinerary.
Depart the Kooman house at 6am ET Saturday morning. Drive 3 hours to the Swan Quarter Ferry terminal. The car ferry will take us on a 2½ hour cruise across the Pamlico Sound. We will arrive on a small island called
Ocracoke. We are going to eat lunch on the island. Exact location is TBD but it will be somewhere on this
map. After lunch, we drive north the other end of the island to catch a second ferry. The 45 minute cruise will take us to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the nation and a famous symbol of North Carolina. After touring the lighthouse, we will continue our drive north along the outer banks to
Kill Devil Hills. As you know, on December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright were successful in making four flights at the base of the big hill. This is why our license plates say “First in Flight” and Ohio’s plate says the “Birthplace of Aviation”. We are staying the night in Nags Head so we can go the “
Taste of OBX”. Fun fact, “OBX” is the airport code for the Outer Banks. On Sunday, we will tour Wright Brother Memorial and drive north to see
Duck,
Corolla and the famous
Corova “4x4” beach to see the wild Spanish Mustangs. After we see the horses, we will start the journey home!
You are probably wondering why I am telling you all this… Well, two reasons... If we don’t make it home, you know where to find us. And secondly, and most importantly, to promote tourism to Raleigh, NC. Margie REALLY wants her brother and sisters living out west to come visit this summer. She misses you terribly and I am hopeful this itinerary will help spark interest for a visit. I am guessing if you come from the west you won’t want to take a long car trip… but we do offer local tours of neighborhood as well.
