Lloyd, spandau ballet, pau gasol
I have also been listening to R&B singer Lloyd. It's kinda rap and probably none of you would like it, but whatever. His single "you" is a sample of spandau ballet's "true" which was in sixteen candles.
Here is a picture of one of my favorite basketball players Pau Gasol. Hopefully someday I will have hair and a beard like him so mom can think i'm ugly. Woohoo!!!

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse...
I know it's hard to deal with living with a brother with a slimy mustache. For that I apologize. It's Mustache March and I think that I speak for everyone when I say 4 weeks of Bristly-Lipped Power are the least I can do for a month that starts with the letter "M."
And no, "Mustache May" wouldn't be kosher. I know that you may not want to admit that you're related to me. I understand why that might be hard and I won't feel bad, I promice. I just can't resist the POWER. Now a ponytail? That which couldn't get worse, got worse. I'm really sorry.

My east coast trips, or how 8th graders are hilarious
Well, Claudia complained that I don't post enough to the blog. Yes, this is probably true. I thought I would recap my trip to the east coast for work last week. I went to Chicago, Washington, DC and New York to help host regional receptions for alumni and newly admitted students to the law school (USC...that is where I work...Richard goes to UCLA...we are rivals)
Sunday, March 11, 2007: I arrive at the airport in plenty of time to make my flight. I dine on delicious airport food. It is still a novelty and I am happy for La Salsa. While on the flight I attempt to read a VERY exciting book called Handbook of Practical Program Evaluation. I fail miserably and watch the movie instead...Night at the museum. This was not a great movie, but satisfied my desire to veg out on the plane. A very successful flight.
Monday, March 12, 2007: I woke up at 10:00 a.m. Very nice to sleep in. I went for a run along Lake Michigan. The weather was surprisingly nice. I went out to Navy Pier with the wind with me...I felt pretty good. Then I turned around, fought the wind the whole way back. Yuck. We had the reception that night in the Chicago Athletic Club, a very old school/old money kind of place. Jackets and ties required kind of place. We had 13 our of the 19 people who RSVP'd attend. Pretty decent. I ate a lot of the cheese on the buffet. That was my favorite part. Margie and Brandon picked me up with Lilly the pug. We got some Subway and went to their house for an hour or so. Their house is adorable and the Realtor said that it is ready to show. Way to be a great decorator Marjorie! Too bad I forgot to get Margie a present...bad sister, I hang my head in shame.
Tuesday, March 13, 2007: Back on a plane to Washington, DC. While en route to the airport, I realize I don't have my phone. I left it in the hotel room. What a moron. Oh well, what can you do. I have the hotel ship it to LA. We arrived in DC and for lunch, I stopped by my favorite sandwich chain in DC, Potbelly's. This also is in Chicago and I recommend it. Yummy sandwiches and my favorite treat, Shelia's Dream Bars. Richard brought me back one when he went to Chicago for interviews. I thought that I would buy three, eat one myself and bring him back two. I ended up eating all three....bad wife, I AGAIN hang my head in shame. The reception that night was very nice. I had to sit in the lobby almost the entire time and let people in the building (high security, the building was a block from the White House). I talked to Sam the Security Guard the whole night.
Wednesday, March 14, 2007: Another plane to NYC. I did some work in the afternoon and then went running in Central Park. The NYC runners were out in full force and were flying past me. I am very very slow. Pasha (my coworker) and I then went to a nice restaurant for dinner. Delicious and nice to go to bed on a full stomach.
Thursday, March 15, 2007: Highlight: meeting up with Emily for lunch. We went to a deli near Times Square that had just HUGE sandwiches. We then ran in the rain to the Gap to get jackets because it had gotten so cold and rainy. Poor Emily's feet in her flip flops looked so cold, but nice because the week before she and Karl had gotten pedicures for her birthday! Karl, I think Emily needs another pedicure for her cold feet :) We had our reception that night at the New York Athletic Club. 35 out of 39 people came. Pretty good turnout I think. When we left the hotel, it was clear again, but by this point...everyone was talking about the storm that was supposed to hit the next day...
Friday, March 16, 2007: We were slated to leave out of JFK at 11:30. We called in the morning, our flight wasn't cancelled, so we checked out of our hotel and went to the airport. Everything seemed fine. I ate more airport food (bacon, egg and cheese croissant) Felt kind of sick from that, and got ready to board the plane. We boarded, and then waited on the runway. The captain said that they needed more visibility to depart. We waited an hour and a half, and then finally, they cancelled our flight. They were cancelling all flights out of JFK that day, so Pasha and I decided to get a hotel and figure out our next plan. We got rooms at the lovely JFK Holiday Inn. I spent the next 45 minutes on hold with United. Pasha decided to call as well and gets through in 10 minutes! What the heck! They rebook us in the next available flight...Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.!!! I DO NOT want to spend the next two days in the JFK Holiday Inn. I begin looking for other options. We decided to try to get a train down to DC and then fly out of there, because the weather isn't as bad. We got a flight out of Dulles at 4:30p.m. on Saturday, arriving in LA at 7:15 p.m.! YIPPPEEE!!!
Saturday, March 17, 2007: We leave the JFK Holiday Inn at 6:00 a.m. (NYC time) and take a shuttle to JFK. From JFK we take a cab to Penn Station. While exiting the cab, I stepped in a huge snow/slush drift and fall down. Clearly I am not used to the snow. We get on our train at 10:00 a.m. and enjoy the nice scenary to Washington DC. We sat by some man who worked in the FBI. Rusty, if you are reading this, he suggested that you start applying for jobs (post graduation jobs) now. Just FYI. We arrived at Union Station and split our cab with some girl who is doing the same thing (took train down from NYC to get to the east coast). When we get in the cab, the driver says "I need to make a quick stop." The girl said, well I have a 2:45 p.m. flight (it is about 12:45 p.m.) can't it wait? The cab driver basically goes crazy, tells us we should get another cab, etc...We tell him fine, no problem make your stop if it is that important...crazy cab driver. When we get out he says..."Thanks for letting me stop, if I win the lottery, I'll give you some money." !?!?!?! What the heck! He stopped to play the lottery.
When we arrive in the airport, I immediatly spot a tour group of pre-teens. Yuck, I thought. I sure pity the people who have to be on a flight with them. Little did I know. We make it to our gate, I eat my last batch of airport food (Yippeee!) and then I see them making their way towards our gate...the same group of pre-teens! Man, oh man...I hope I don't have to sit by any of them! We board the plane a little late (5:00 p.m.),. I go back to my seat and I am sitting by an 8th grader who promptly starts asking me questions, even before I sit down! Oh the joys of 8th grade.
This is what I learned from Nathan (aka Buddy [that is what his family calls him]) on my flight home
1. He loves football, basketball and baseball, but football best of all
2. USC Football sucks, UCLA is awesome
3. Paintballing is a sport. They have teams and professionals...and magazines. We looked through 4 magazines for a while. He pointed out which gear he has. I can't remember the names of the guns he owns
4. The girl two seats up likes him, but he doesn't like her
5. His brother is super rich, he has his own company. He married a girl from South Africa who isn't black (he wanted to make sure that was clarified)
6. The couple to our right started dating on this trip. Nathan thinks the guy is dating her because she buys him things. She bought him a pair of shoes on the trip (sound like Sam anyone?)
7. He likes ATVs. He is saving up his money for a new one. He didn't call it an ATV, but I can't remember the exact name he used.
8. He likes Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy, his rich brother bought him his Ipod
9. Almost everyone in his grade has a cell phone
10. On his 7th grade trip to Sea World, he drank the water in the whale tank and immediatly threw up.
Clearly I learned a lot.
All in all it was a very nice trip, and I actually did enjoy my flight home. Mostly because I was returning to the Chard. I missed him very much.

So what's in your CD player Mk. 2...
Just thought I'd get an update on what everybody's been subjecting their ears to.
_______________________________________________
Right now I'm running through a playlist that's...
...three parts Bob Dylan...
...one part Ben Folds...
...one part the Shins (their new album is GREAT)...
...one part Iron & Wine...
...a generous handful of William Shatner...
...a pinch each of Elliott Smith, the Decemberists, Ratatat and Minibosses.
________________________________________________
An artist who I just bumped into (for those who love 50's and 60's soul, or more accurately music that SOUNDS like 50's and 60's soul) is James Hunter.

The record is called "People Gonna Talk," and it is hands down the most fun I've had with an album in a long long time. Take everything good about early sixties bubblegum, drain out everything that wasn't good, fill in the gaps with James Brown-esque soul, add a dash of Van Morrison and a dynamite horns section, and you start getting an idea of how listenable/dancible this record is. Just try not to get up and shake a little booty. I DARE you!
Honestly though, I'd recommend this record to everyone...everyman and pretetious music snob alike. I suspect (from the lack of email about it) that you guys (understandably) weren't big fans of Beirut. I forgot how weird it really is. But James Hunter? Oh man, everybody can dig on it.

Since it's "Mothering Sunday" in the UK...
Yeah, Jon-Jon's been talking about visiting you guys for weeks now. I can't bellieve I didn't give you a heads-up. Yup, he's got a lot of fond memories of the Gimbel Manorhouse, but who doesn't? You didn't happen to take any digital photos of his wife and daughter, did you? I still haven't had the pleasure of meeting Jess. In fact, I haven't seen Jonathan since my wedding nearly 4 years ago. Sad how that works out sometimes. Anyway, I'm glad you had a good chat with him. It's true, servicemen do have a unique perspective on this war and its rammifications. I'm curious though, what was the jist of his analysis? I'm curious you see because in our political discussions via the internets, Jon's mentioned that he leans republican these days, even if he doesn't like Geroge Bush.Anyhow, glad you had a pleasent visit.

Jonny John makes a visit!
The coolest thing happened about 11:30 today. Jonathan Johnson showed up on our doorstep with wife and daughter in tow. It was so fantastic to see him again, and to meet his lovely wife, Jessica, and his sweet, 4-month old daughter, Hope. Isn't that the most beautiful name, Hope! Anyway, we visited for about an hour and a half! He got to tour the place and see all the improvements. Like you, he wondered why Ed waited until the kids were all grown and gone. And he marvelled at all of Ed's great carpentry.
He and Jessica just built a house in Tennessee--actually, Jessica was in charge because Jon was in Iraq! Just in case you want to stay in touch, his address is 583 Mountain View Drive, Clarksville, Tennessee 37043. His phone is 931-358-5386, and his email address is Jonathan Johnson42@yahoo.com. Betsey, he would like a copy of the family contact list when you update it! They said they have lots of room for visitors, and Margie and Brandon, they even talked about moving to North Carolina, which they both feel is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
We had quite a conversion about his time spent in Iraq. If you ever want to know what the real truth is about stuff going on, you really need to talk to a serviceman. They are the only ones who have the real perspective about it all. I learned more from Jonathan than I've ever learned from reading magazines and newspapers, or listening to NPR or CNN. He is so intelligent and erudite (He said, "Just like Rusty!" He is so amazed that the two of them are pursuing such like careers, from such unlike angles.
Anyway, he had wonderful memories of time spent in our home. You all hold such a special place in his heart! I thought you might like to know!
Love, Claudia

Pros: Nice weather, fatty foods, got to see Meridth and the Chard, little bit of a tan, beach, crazy-big pumpkin pancakes, 300 in graumans theatre, hollywood freaks, bums, learning to properly tape up a shattered window.
Cons: Hitting a deer, driving way too much, getting a ticket for not yeilding to pedestrians that were already past and i couldn't even see because of my taped up window (the ticket was for a taped up window too), fatty foods, not seeing my sister who lives in LA, sleeping on couches and floors, spending lots of money, and of course, being away from emily.

In related news...
I've decided -- just now on a mad impulse -- to grow a bitchin' 70's mustache...
...in honor of your friend and mine, Ned Flanders. No word yet how Meridth may respond.
...in honor of your friend and mine, Ned Flanders. No word yet how Meridth may respond.
A request, if you please...
Meridth, my favorite person with vowels in their name, is having a pretty tough week. Or I guess I should say that since Nick is having a pretty tough week, Meridth's having one too. Nick's had pus building up in one of his lungs for the past several and last week he had it surgically treated and he had some more plumbing installed. He's got two tubes (1' in diameter) inserted into his chest. He says it "hurts like hell" to breathe, which you can't really avoid. Anyway, he's still in the Horspital and my request is simply that you guys try to find time to touch base with her this week, either via email (Rothy.Squidling@gmail.com) or per telephone (619-442-0594). She would be thrilled to hear from any of you and she's feeling pretty lonely (as there isn't "a Gimbel around") so anything you could do to comfort her would make me feel a lot better too.So yeah, keep praying for Nick (if that's your wont) but something I was thinking about today: Nick's only a year and a half older than Dad. These things (Grandpa too, natch!) get you thinking about mortality, that's for sure.
Anyway, back to the salt mines of academia...

Greetings from Park City

Hello Family!
Casey and I just got back from the spa here in lovely Park City. Brandon treated us to a massage and a facial. It was super relaxing. The boys didn't end up going skiing. Brandon's back hurt and it's about 60 degrees so Ryan was concerned with the snow consistency. Overall - We're having a good time here, celebrating Casey's big 3-0. We think next year, we should celebrate all spring birthdays in Vegas. Who's in? Hope you all are. We love you!
Thought we'd post a couple shots.
Kisses!

My Birthday by Ryan S Gimbel
Today was my birthday. I turned 31
I do feel older but i still have fun.
When i woke from my slumber at quarter till 8,
my wife had put up a sign with balloons. aint she great?
I took Ashley to school and shipped springs and struts.
When the Koni's come in, on the track i'll be nuts!!
Casey was done with school at Eleven fifteen.
We went to lunch for my birthay. isn't that keen!?!
Double Jalepeno is ambrosia devine!
looking for C.D.s to make mine.
i walked out with nothing because i'm a cheapskate.
it's all genetic, my wife thinks its great!
an afternoon nap really kicks ass.
i washed the impreza so buyers don't pass.
it was then that i spent some quality time
with that ever so lovely family of mine.
i read chloe some books
and helped ashley with homework
those two words almost rhyme so i'll ask you this favor.
continue to read! don't let attentions waver
the sun has now set and the lights start to dim.
spending time with my wife is not just a whim.
with a sip of some brew and a lounge in the chair
the day is almost done. time to let down my hair.
that last line is not funny. don't laugh you jerk
reading this to my wife got more than a smirk
i love you all and hope to see you soon
happy birthday to me and a kiss to the moon.
-ryan

Happy Birthday Ryan!!!!
Hey dude. Happy birthday. I hope you're having a fun day. Tell us what you are doing/did. I would call but don't know what your schedule is like. What shift do you work? Plus I don't have much to say other than happy birthday and my phone message wouldn't be as funny as your birthday phone message to me. "what up dude. Just thought i'd call and say happy birthday bro." It wasn't anything in particular you said that was funny, but it was. I should have kept it.

Trying...

So here I sit at my desk trying desperately to get motivated to start the day. I don't want to do this day. I didn't want to do yesterday and I don't want to do tomorrow. I feel like I live for Saturday and Sunday as those are the only days I truly own, but even those days are full of obligations, errands and have-to's. Lunch with friends sometimes feels like another 'cross of my check-list' type of chore. Sigh. Does any one else feel this way?
I read an article recently in the WSJ called Escape from New York. What caught my attention about the article was the opening line. "Many cubicle dwellers in their 20s feel blocked off from the American Dream by killer work hours, job stress and housing prices that far exceed their grasp. After asking herself at age 28, "Is this all there is?" Melissa and her husband took what family members said was a crazy risk -- and found a satisfying answer."
Hello? Are you talking about me? It really started to make me think about what in the world I'm doing? I hate this career. I hate working long hours and working all the time in stress. I just hate it. I want a comfortable lifestyle yes, but feel like I'm not even able to enjoy anything. It's as if working like this has made me a person that I don't want to be.
I wonder about Grandpa. Did he ever feel like this? Was he able to enjoy his days? His family? Is it the pace now days that makes everything feel so frantic? Or is this what adult life is suppose to be like?
Again, not looking for answers but using this medium to vent. I think that's why Karl's teacher suggested it for stress management. Online journaling. Makes me feel better and more able to face the day.
I love you all. Happy Birthday to Dad and to my lovely BRANDON. He's 32 today.

Oscar-winning shorts...
This is a still from the short film that won the Oscar this week. It's called "West Bank Story" and is an amusing musical tribute to "West Side Story" which takes place in Israel. It's very very droll and I thought of Betsey all the way through. )It's got a real Bolywood aestetic.)
You can download it for two bucks from iTunes, and it's well worth the price of admission. Check out the animated shorts as well. Disney's 2D entry for animated short is a moving interpretation of "The Little Matchgirl," which is by far Hans Christian Anderson's saddest work ever. Ever. Also: Happy Birthday to Dad. The Birthday Bird bring any donuts to Jefferson street today?
