Matilda McBean Won't Clean Under Her Bed

So I'm totally charmed...

I'm in the running for a writing contest online and basically they have the most adorable kids read your story and the story that is watched the most wins millions. (i.e. $1,500). Go check it out. It's at Smories.com Do it. And yay.

ADDENDUM: Apparently you can watch it multiple times and it will increase my chances of winning the contest. It's lasting all throughout May, so click back often and tell your friends!

I just got finished listening to this podcast from This American Life and I was wondering, Ed, what your take was on it?

Hard Luck!

My goodness you Gimbels are good-looking. That's definitely the main reason why I married in... good looking babies. Anyway, Jay and Josh (Edward's friends) found some Grandpa Ed L. stuff online and I thought it was pretty interesting. I have to say I'm pretty fascinated with his WWII experience. I, however, don't know how entirely accurate this bio is since it stated that Edward Lester was born in London. (I thought he was born in Chicago). Anyway, I've attached some links if any of you are interested.

Totally jealous.

So the Art Institute of Chicago is going to have Caravaggio’s The Supper at Emmaus on loan from the National Gallery in London, from October 10, 2009 to January 31, 2010. This painting is suppose to be one of the most influential and well respected paintings coming from the canon of Western art. I was able to see it while I was in London, but it really is phenomenal to see in person. I'm super envious. I wish we lived nearby, I would love to sneak another peak.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

So when my parents were packing up to move to Australia they found some old slides that I'd never seen before. I've spent a delightfully absurd amount of time scanning and doctoring these photos (to get rid of the dust and make sure our skin tone isn't green). For those interested here's the link to those slides. I'm still looking for my baby pictures where I look like the Michelin Man.

Anyway, I was thinking that I wanted to do the same for the Gimbel family. Being that it's a good possibility that Edward and I are moving to Kentucky, I think some of the weekends that Uschi's visiting Grandma and Grandpa, I can go through your old photos, scan them, and put them online somewhere so everyone can have a copy of them.

...just a thought.

love you all,

Meridth

Liquid Luck

So as luck would have it I have a certain anonymous friend who has a certain anonymous brother who is a film projectionist. Which is why it is 3:43 AM and I just got back from seeing Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I have been impatient to see this movie ever since I thought it was going to be released 8 months ago. So I just about wet myself when I found out that I was going to see the movie 3 days early.

I guess what I would have to say that I was impressed against my will, as this is my favorite of the Harry Potter books and I was expecting to be thoroughly disappointed. Anyway, brace yourself for my half delusional review (mild spoilers included). The overall tone of the film was perfectly creepy. There was a point where I felt like I might have nightmares. (Hopefully that doesn't come to fruition). The acting was superb and the cast has always been a perfect fit, except for the fact that Richard Harris from the first two movies understood how to play Dumbledore much better than Michael Gambon ever did. But I have to say that he (Dumbledore #2) didn't bother me at all in this movie. Quidditch was kept to a minimum that didn't affect the pacing of the film and was a nice break from all the heavy stuff. The special effects were wonderful and the look of the film was delightfully dark. Draco Malfoy haunted the screen and gave great pacing to the film and brought an appropriate sense of uneasiness. The altered death scene with Harry perfectly capable of physically responding whilst Draco confronted Dumbledore was an excellent change of pace. The audience could visually see his trust in Snape being destroyed and I thought this added to the emotional climax of Dumbledore's death. Really, as of now in the wee hours of the morning, my only complaints are Harry's heavy make-up job when McGonagall addresses the three after the cursing of Katie Bell (Harry has on some pretty luscious lipstick and darkened eyebrows), and the scene with Ginny and Harry in the Room of Requirement was unnecessarily awkward with Ginny. (Blech).

Anyway, overall a success. I can't wait to see it again. (I hope it holds up in the re-watching.)

Good night all... or should I say good morning ;)

I just posted an article on our blog about the disturbing effect of plastics on small children/infants if you're interested.

CORALINE!!!!

If you haven't read this book, read it! It's pretty great. Read it before the movie drops in February and you'll be among the cool "in-the-know" crowd.

My Sister's getting married!

...so I did her announcements
Apparently my new brother-in-law is a James Bond fan too! I wonder what the stats are for male fans versus female fans? ;)

Indiana Blues?

Or is that Blue Indiana? On the way home this afternoon I heard a report on NPR about Huntington and Roanoke and how Indiana might be going Democrat. Check out the story here.

Makes me glad I registered in Indiana.

Update-erific

Hi guys! Just to keep you guys posted... I've been a busy bee. I officially have a website up. It's been taking me forever and I'm happy it exhists... but I still have a lot more to go on it. I chose Octopus Ink Illustration as my business identity because nobody can remember how to spell either of my names for beans... so I decided to go aquatic. Really it's just a play on the medium I mostly paint in, which is watercolor.

Anyway, so that's that... and I recently started an Edward and Me blog if you guys are interested. We'll see were things go :)

Love you all and hope things are well,

Meridth

Another Typical Day in the Gas Chamber

So everybody keeps asking me how Edward has been doing in Basic. How do you answer a question like that? My impression of Basic Training is that it really really sucks for everybody, but that it's a necessary evil. So... I just got a letter from Edward today talking about his experience in the gas chamber and though I'd share:

"We had a few hours briefing about the operation of our chem mask. Pretty typical stuff. Most people were a mixture of nervous/excited. Through the trees we could see the squat brown building lurking like a beast. I personally am not especially fond of gas masks, it feels like you're breathing through a straw, but I can tell you it beats the alternative. They have a sliding metal door and a drill Sergeant stands there telling us that we're all going to die.

Inside, the walls are damp concrete, kind of like a basement. The lights are dim or maybe it seems that way through the gas or the fogged up glass of the mask.

Suddenly we are instructed to break the seal of our mask and expose our nose and mouth and recite our name, rank and social security number. After a brief burning sensation and a moment of panic I resealed my mask clearing out the bad air. My eyes burned, my nose dripped mucous, I was breathing hard. I could feel the burning now on my neck and hands and I was particularly concerned almost panicky about the next part.

They rushed us over near the exit and shouted for us to remove our masks. Taking a deep breath I slipped my head out from the straps. I pounced on the first three lines of the 'Soldiers Creed,' the chant we say every morning. Gagging, I fought my way through lines 4 and 5. Up to line 7 I was okay and then they threw me out the door.

On hitting the daylight my first thought was that I couldn't breathe. I was breathing only in short little hiccups. Fighting back panic again I walked as calmly as I could, waiving my arms to air-ate my clothes. Then my eyes started burning. Ow. That was the worst part. The only way to clear my eyes was to open them... which stung.

Long story short, five minutes later I was alright. Now about 8 hours later I can still smell it just a touch and the back of my neck still burns. All in all, it wasn't as bad as I expected and I'd have no real hesitation to repeat the experience within the confines of a mission."

So there you have it. A day in the life of Private Gimbel.

Falling Behind

This weekend is my cousins wedding... so I just barely got to the computer and am scrambling to catch up to all the zillions of things that have happened. First off Ed, Brandon, Margie, Ryan, Emily HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you all ate something delicious and did something fun, like construction or something.

Second off it was so good to see you all. I was definitely entertained this past weekend and it was nice to catch up. I especially loved how much Ashley and Chloe loved their new cousin Nora.

Casey.. you and your family are definitely in my thoughts and prayers.

I love you all and I will definitely post some of the pictures I took when I get back to San Diego.

Love,

Meridth

Private Edward

I just got Edward's address. He wants you guys to know that he's "well, tired, but optimistic." I am beyond excited to finally be in contact with him. I know that he would love to hear from all of you, so here's his address...

PVT Gimbel, Edward R.
E Company, 2-60th INF REGT, 193rd BCT BDE USATC and FJ
Bldg. 11000 Dixie Road
Fort Jackson, SC 29207-6100

(Put a circled 4 on the back of the envelope.)

I know he'll really appreciate your support. My Dad told me that it was more important for him to get letters while he was in Basic Training for only 2 months than while he was on his mission for two years. I'm sure it's because they are more isolated and there's less emotional and moral support.

Anyway, thanks guys!

Utah + Gimbels = Happy Family Time

So my phone crapped out on me, the battery shut down, just as I got a text from one of the coolest people in the world. I am so incredibly excited about this weekend. It is going to be so great to see everyone. I heart the Gimbels big time. In answer to your question Casey I arrive at the SLC airport this Friday at 4PM and hooray. I know Claudia that you and I will be at the airport at the same time. (Right?) I don't know when Margie or the Hawkinses are going to be in Utah...

But yeah, I am beyond excited to see you all. I love you all so much.

Love,

Meridth

Edward's Gone

...so Edward's gone off to basic. 2 months is going to suck again, but I think Edward's pretty amazing, and being trilingual will be extremely useful let alone cool. So I'm glad for our future, even if Edward (sans beard) is going to run around with a bunch of 19 year olds with M-16s.

Thanks everybody for the support. Love you all.

Mystery Package

So we got a surprise package the other day from an anonymous sender. The package was sent to me and Edward in typed lettering from Utah. Since we have friends and family in Utah it could be just about anyone. Anyway, whoever that blessed person is...I'm stinking excited. As you all know, and to the chagrin of poor Ashley towards her less than feminine aunt, Edward and I both like comic books and Spiderman is an absolute classic. (We fight about DC versus Marvel all the time....and sorry guys...I'm a bigger fan of Batman, Superman and the JLA). Anyway this action figure we got in the mail has 46 points of articulation!!!!! Which means that this is a better model to draw from than...

this.

Hooray for presents and hooray for anonymous donors. :)

A request, if you please...

Meridth, my favorite person with vowels in their name, is having a pretty tough week. Or I guess I should say that since Nick is having a pretty tough week, Meridth's having one too. Nick's had pus building up in one of his lungs for the past several and last week he had it surgically treated and he had some more plumbing installed. He's got two tubes (1' in diameter) inserted into his chest. He says it "hurts like hell" to breathe, which you can't really avoid. Anyway, he's still in the Horspital and my request is simply that you guys try to find time to touch base with her this week, either via email (Rothy.Squidling@gmail.com) or per telephone (619-442-0594). She would be thrilled to hear from any of you and she's feeling pretty lonely (as there isn't "a Gimbel around") so anything you could do to comfort her would make me feel a lot better too.

So yeah, keep praying for Nick (if that's your wont) but something I was thinking about today: Nick's only a year and a half older than Dad. These things (Grandpa too, natch!) get you thinking about mortality, that's for sure.

Anyway, back to the salt mines of academia...

-Rusty
